Few stretches of Scottish coastline have shaped a golf course quite like the East Lothian shoreline does at Longniddry. Founded in 1921 and designed by Harry Colt — the same architect behind Sunningdale, Royal Portrush, and Wentworth — the course sits on the Firth of Forth with views across to Fife and the Bass Rock. Colt threaded the layout through a distinctive mix of linksland and mature woodland, a combination that makes Longniddry genuinely unusual on a coastline better known for pure, exposed links. The result is a course with real character: wind off the Forth punishes loose shots on the open holes, while the tree-lined stretches demand a different kind of precision entirely.
East Lothian is rightly called Scotland's Golf Coast, home to Muirfield, Gullane, North Berwick, and a cluster of courses that would be the pride of almost any other region in the world. Longniddry holds its own in that company as a well-regarded members' club with a loyal following.
Par 68 reflects a layout that rewards accuracy far more than power, with a routing where making the right decisions — not just hitting the ball hard — determines your score.
