Few private clubs in England generate quite the mystique of Queenwood. Opened in 2001 and designed by Kyle Phillips — the American architect also responsible for Kingsbarns in Scotland — it was conceived from the outset as an exclusive retreat for a small membership, with no public access and almost no media exposure. That deliberate secrecy has only deepened its reputation. What little has filtered out places it firmly among the finest modern layouts in the British Isles, and those lucky enough to have played it tend to speak of it in hushed, reverent tones.
Phillips sculpted the course through Surrey heathland, the same belt of sandy, acid soil that gave the world Sunningdale, Wentworth, and Walton Heath. That terrain — heather, silver birch, Scots pine, and fast-draining turf that plays firm and true even in wet English winters — produces a particular style of golf: precise, strategic, unforgiving of the loose shot, but endlessly rewarding when you find the right line.
Ottershaw sits in the Surrey commuter belt between Woking and Chertsey, well within the golden triangle of English heathland golf. Queenwood occupies that landscape without advertising itself, which is precisely the point.
