Khancoban sits at the foot of the Snowy Mountains in the far south of New South Wales, a small town born almost entirely from one of Australia's most ambitious engineering projects — the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme. The town itself was purpose-built in the 1950s and 60s to house the workers who carved tunnels and dams through the alpine landscape, and the golf club grew from that same tight-knit community spirit. Playing here means stepping into a slice of mid-century industrial history that has quietly settled into something much gentler.
The setting is the real draw. The Snowy Mountains region delivers dramatic elevation, crisp air, and landscapes shaped by snowmelt rivers and alpine pasture. At this altitude and latitude, conditions can shift quickly — warm summer mornings can give way to sharp afternoon winds rolling off the ranges, and the course plays differently depending on the season.
For visiting golfers, Khancoban offers the kind of unhurried, honest country golf that has largely disappeared from more populated parts of Australia — a full 18 holes where the mountain backdrop does much of the heavy lifting.
