Béjar sits in the southern reaches of Salamanca province, where the Sierra de Béjar rises sharply out of the Castilian meseta — a landscape of granite outcrops, chestnut forests, and fast-running streams that has more in common with the mountain villages of Extremadura than the open plains typically associated with this part of Spain.
