San Diego's Mission Valley has long been prime real estate, and Riverwalk Golf Club occupies one of its most distinctive corridors — a flat, open stretch of the San Diego River that runs through the heart of the city. The course was designed by Ted Robinson and opened in 1998 on land that once housed the historic Stardust Country Club, giving it an unusual urban golf pedigree. Its layout winds through the valley floor with the river as a constant companion, and the San Diego Trolley line running alongside creates a soundtrack unlike virtually any other round in Southern California.
What you get here is a genuinely accessible, walkable public course in one of America's most expensive golf markets — a rare thing in a city where quality public options are harder to come by than the sunshine would suggest. The surrounding mountains frame the valley on clear days, and the mild climate means the course plays year-round in reliably good condition.
Riverwalk sits in transition — plans have long circulated to redevelop the site into a mixed-use urban village, giving rounds here a certain awareness that the land has more chapters to write.
