The Maplewood Golf Club

Few courses in New England carry the kind of quiet prestige that Maplewood does. Built in 1908 as part of the grand Maplewood Hotel resort, the course is one of the oldest in New Hampshire and survives today as a rare artifact of the Gilded Age golf boom, when grand mountain hotels built courses to entertain wealthy summer guests escaping the city heat. The original layout was designed in the classic early-American style — open, walking-friendly, and shaped by the land rather than imposed upon it.

Bethlehem sits in the White Mountains at elevation, which means the air is crisp, the fairways tend to run firm, and the views toward the surrounding peaks are a constant distraction. The region drew tuberculosis patients and socialites alike in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and golf was central to that culture of leisure.
