Few American golf clubs carry the historical weight of Newport Country Club. Founded in 1893, it stands as one of the founding member clubs of the United States Golf Association and hosted the very first U.S. Open Championship in 1895 — a match-play event won by Horace Rawlins. The club returned to host the U.S. Amateur that same year, cementing Newport's place at the very foundation of organized golf in America. The original layout was designed by Scottish immigrant Willie Davis, and the course has since been shaped over the decades, most notably by Donald Ross.
Newport, Rhode Island is Gilded Age America made real — a city of ocean breezes, grand mansions, and a social register that dates back centuries. The club sits among that same aristocratic landscape, and the experience of playing here carries an unmistakable sense of old money and older traditions.
As a tightly private members' club with no resort or public access, Newport Country Club remains largely beyond view — which only deepens its mystique. A par 70 layout that has tested the best players in the world since the 19th century deserves that reverence.
