Few golf destinations in Quebec sit as far from the beaten path as this one. Chibougamau is a mining and forestry town deep in the James Bay lowlands of northern Quebec, roughly 700 kilometers north of Montreal — a place where the boreal forest stretches to the horizon in every direction and the seasons are genuinely unforgiving. Golf here is not a resort amenity or a status symbol; it is a community institution, a reason for locals to get outside during a summer that arrives late and leaves early.
The course serves a dual municipality — Chibougamau and its smaller neighbor Chaplais — which gives you a sense of how important it is to the region. When a remote northern community of this size supports a full 18-hole, par-72 layout, it speaks to the seriousness with which people take the game up here.
Expect playing conditions shaped by the subarctic climate: black spruce and tamarack framing the fairways, firm ground after the brief thaw, and long evening light in July that lets rounds stretch well past what the clock might suggest.
