Few American golf courses in the 1990s generated as much polarizing debate as Royal New Kent. Designed by Mike Strantz and opened in 1996, it was immediately championed by some as a visionary masterpiece and dismissed by others as willfully bizarre — and that tension is precisely what made it matter. Strantz, a former Tom Fazio associate who struck out on his own with a fiercely individual design philosophy, drew inspiration from the rugged links of Ireland and Scotland, creating a course that feels almost dislocated from its Virginia Tidewater surroundings: massive fescue-covered mounds, blind shots, pot bunkers, and fairways that heave and roll with theatrical drama.
The setting in Providence Forge, a rural stretch of New Kent County between Richmond and Williamsburg, offers no particularly dramatic natural topography — Strantz essentially invented the landscape, sculpting it from relatively flat terrain into something that reads as ancient and wind-battered.
Royal New Kent regularly earned spots on national course rankings through the early 2000s and remains a pilgrimage site for golfers drawn to architecture with genuine personality. Playing it asks for imagination and shot-making creativity over brute force.
