Few golf courses in Scotland sit quite like this one. Kingussie Golf Club occupies a hillside above the town, perched in the Cairngorms National Park where the Spey Valley opens up beneath you and the Monadhliath Mountains form the backdrop. It is a setting that would be extraordinary even if the golf were ordinary — and the golf is far from ordinary.
The course dates to the late 19th century, making it one of the older clubs in the Highlands, and it has the character to match that age. The layout climbs and tumbles across natural ground, rewarding local knowledge and punishing complacency. Par is a modest 70, but the terrain, the Highland winds funneling through the valley, and the tight, heathery rough have a way of reminding visitors that modesty on the card does not mean modesty on the ground.
Kingussie sits on the A9 corridor, making it a natural stop for golfers traveling the famous Highland golf trail between Perthshire and Inverness. The town itself is a proper Highland community — home, famously, to one of the most successful shinty clubs in Scotland — and the golf club carries that same grounded, unpretentious pride.
