Carved into the naval landscape of Visakhapatnam's Eastern Naval Command, INS Dega Golf Course is one of India's service courses with a character shaped as much by its military setting as by the game itself. Like many courses operating under the Indian Navy's jurisdiction, it functions primarily for serving personnel and their guests, offering a quieter, unhurried round away from the commercial golf circuit — a rarity in a city as busy and layered as Vizag.
Visakhapatnam itself is one of India's great port cities, flanked by the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, and that coastal geography defines what playing golf here feels like. The air carries the weight of the sea, the light shifts dramatically between seasons, and the landscape alternates between scrub, palm, and the kind of deep green that only sustained humidity produces. Monsoon conditions between June and September can transform the course considerably.
For visiting golfers, access typically requires military affiliation or a hosted introduction. Those who do get on will find a course rooted in tradition, institutional pride, and the particular camaraderie that service golf tends to generate everywhere in the world.
