Black Bear Golf Club sits in Franklin, a small borough in Sussex County, roughly 50 miles northwest of Manhattan, where New Jersey's Ridge and Valley terrain gives way to rolling hills, hardwood forest, and the kind of open farmland that makes you forget the metro region is anywhere nearby. Sussex County has long been the state's most rural corner, and its landscape lends itself naturally to golf that asks you to work with the land rather than against it.
The area around Franklin carries an interesting industrial past — the town was once the world's leading zinc-mining center — but today the region draws visitors for its outdoor character, and resort golf fits comfortably alongside its hiking trails and lake communities. Black Bear is part of that recreational identity, offering a destination-style experience in a part of New Jersey that rewards the drive.
As a resort course, the expectation is a layout that welcomes a broad range of players while still providing enough variety and scenery to make the round memorable. Sussex County's wooded elevation changes tend to keep things interesting from tee to green.
