Few golf settings in the Caribbean carry the kind of layered history that Punta Borinquen does. The course occupies land that was once part of Ramey Air Force Base, a major U.S. Strategic Air Command installation that operated here from World War II through the early 1970s. When the base closed, the grounds were transferred to the Puerto Rican government, and the golf course — originally built to serve military personnel — became a public facility open to the civilian community of Aguadilla and the surrounding northwest coast.
That military legacy is still written into the landscape. The course sits on dramatic clifftop terrain above the Atlantic, where the trade winds blow hard and honest, turning what might look like a straightforward layout into something far more demanding. Errant shots here can mean genuine exposure to the ocean air, and reading the wind becomes as important as reading the greens.
Aguadilla is surf and beach country, the kind of Puerto Rican town with its own proud identity well apart from the San Juan resort corridor. Playing Borinquen feels local, historical, and genuinely elemental.
