Few urban golf facilities anywhere in the country can match what Harborside International pulled off on Chicago's southeast side — two full 18-hole championship courses, Port and Starboard, carved out of a former landfill along Lake Calumet in the early 1990s. The nautical naming theme is no accident: this is industrial lakefront Chicago, a landscape of waterways, marshes, and big Midwestern sky that gives the property a raw, windswept character you won't find at a manicured suburban club. Dick Nugent designed both tracks with strategic variety in mind, and the sheer scale of the operation made Harborside one of the most ambitious public-access golf projects the city had ever seen.
Playing here means contending with real Chicago weather and the kind of open exposure that turns a calm afternoon into a club-selection puzzle the moment the wind shifts off the lake. Neither course hides behind trees or soft conditions — you earn your score.
Harborside has historically been one of the better values in a city that takes its public golf seriously, drawing everyday players and competitive amateurs alike from across the Chicago metro.
