Sanibel Island is one of Southwest Florida's most distinctive addresses — a barrier island famous for its east-west orientation, its shell-strewn beaches, and a development ethos that has kept it far less commercialized than most of the Gulf Coast. More than half the island is protected conservation land, which means golf here exists in genuine dialogue with nature rather than simply alongside it. The birding alone is world-class, and the wildlife corridors that thread through the island make rounds feel like something between sport and expedition.
A private club carrying the Sanctuary name fits that identity well. The layout plays through mature subtropical vegetation — expect mangroves, sabal palms, and the kind of canopy that keeps things cooler than the open resort courses on the mainland — and water is never far from play. The wildlife sightings that punctuate a round here are part of the experience, not a distraction from it.
For members, the appeal is as much about the setting as the competition. This is golf on Sanibel's own terms: unhurried, visually rich, and unlikely to be replicated anywhere else on Florida's Gulf Coast.
