Diamond Creek

Few private mountain courses in the Southern Appalachians carry the reputation Diamond Creek does. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2004, it sits within the Elk River valley near Banner Elk at elevations that push toward 4,000 feet, and it ranks consistently among the top private courses in North Carolina — and in national rankings that measure purely on design merit. Fazio routed the layout through dense hardwood forest and along the Diamond Creek watershed, producing a course where the natural landscape does much of the work: creek crossings, dramatic elevation changes, and tightly framed fairways demand precision far more than distance. The par-70 configuration is not a concession — it reflects intentional design choices where short par-4s with severe angles reward intelligent shot-making over power.
