Few American golf destinations carry as much genuine heritage as Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club. The course was designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1927, making it one of the great architect's enduring works in the Sandhills of North Carolina — a region Ross shaped more thoroughly than perhaps any other part of the country. The layout rewards thoughtful shot-making over raw power, with the crowned, firm greens and subtle contours that define Ross's best work. Pine Needles has hosted the U.S. Women's Open 4 times — in 1996, 2001, 2007, and 2022 — a record for that championship at a single venue that speaks volumes about the USGA's regard for its design integrity.
Southern Pines sits at the heart of the Pinehurst resort corridor, where the sandy, well-drained soils and longleaf pine forests create ideal turf conditions year-round. The Sandhills have long been one of the most respected golf communities in the country.
Pine Needles is owned and operated by the Bell family, who have maintained its unpretentious, welcoming character — a genuine golf club where the game still feels like the point.
