Few public golf courses in America carry the civic weight of Hiawatha Golf Club. One of Minneapolis's oldest and most storied municipal layouts, it sits within Hiawatha Golf Course park on the city's south side, sharing landscape with Lake Hiawatha and the broader chain of lakes that defines Minneapolis's outdoor identity. The flat, open terrain reflects the glacially shaped geography of the Twin Cities, and the course has long served as an equalizer — a place where every level of golfer in the metro area has shown up to play since the early 20th century.
The layout plays as a true urban public, where mature trees line many holes and the surrounding parkland gives the round a greenway feel despite being minutes from city neighborhoods. A par of 73 is a small but telling detail — somewhere on the card, a par 5 or an extra par 3 gives the course a slightly unconventional rhythm that rewards players who actually pay attention to the scorecard rather than assuming they know what's coming.
Minneapolis has a serious golf culture that punches well above its climate's weight, and Hiawatha has always been central to it — the kind of course where the game gets passed down through generations of city families.
