Bernalda sits in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, one of the country's least-visited and most quietly compelling corners. The town perches above the Bradano River valley, a short drive from the Ionian coast and the ancient ruins of Metapontum — a Magna Graecia colony founded by Greek settlers in the 8th century BC. This stretch of the Mezzogiorno is known for vast wheat fields, wild orchids, and a horizon that seems to extend without limit toward the sea. It is emphatically not traditional golf country, which makes encountering a full 18-hole layout here something of a surprise.
Golf Club Metaponto draws its name directly from that ancient Greek heritage, and the course occupies terrain typical of the Basilicata interior — open, sun-baked, and exposed to winds rolling in off the Ionian. Summer heat is a genuine factor for visiting players, and the dry season leaves the ground firm and fast.
For golfers touring southern Italy, Basilicata tends to get overlooked in favor of Sicily or the Amalfi coast.
