Few public golf venues in the Chicago suburbs carry the civic ambition of George Dunne National. Built and operated by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, it was designed by Ken Killian and Dick Nugent — 2 of the Chicago area's most prolific and respected architects — and opened in 1991. Named for longtime Cook County Board President George Dunne, the course was conceived as a championship-caliber public facility, offering the kind of golf experience that had long been the province of the region's many exclusive private clubs.
The layout rolls through forest preserve land on Chicago's southwest side, with mature tree corridors, wetland areas, and the open, wind-exposed stretches that define so much of Illinois golf. Killian and Nugent gave it genuine strategic variety — the routing rewards course management as much as raw power, and the conditioning has historically punched above its weight for a county-run operation.
For golfers who live in or are passing through the south suburbs, George Dunne represents exactly what good municipal golf should be: accessible, challenging, and rooted in the landscape around it.
