Few courses carry more weight in American golf than this one. Donald Ross shaped No. 2 over several decades in the early 20th century, and it remains his masterpiece — a design so influential that its logic has been studied, imitated, and debated by architects ever since. The 2014 restoration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw stripped away decades of rough and irrigation to return the course closer to Ross's original sandy, wiregrass vision, and the result was widely celebrated as one of the great acts of golf stewardship in modern history.
The course's genius lies in its greens — crowned, convex putting surfaces that shed approach shots in every direction, punishing anything less than a precise, committed strike. There are no water hazards, no forced carries, no theatrical distractions. The difficulty is quiet and cumulative, built from the land itself.
Pinehurst has hosted more USGA championships than any other venue, including multiple U.S. Opens and the landmark 2014 edition where both the men's and women's Opens were played in the same week for the first time. It is, simply, the spiritual center of American golf.
