Poppy Ridge is a 27-hole public facility operated by the Northern California Golf Association, and the Zinfandel/Merlot combination is 1 of the 3 nine-hole routing pairings available across its full layout. Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1996, the course was built to serve as a member benefit for NCGA cardholders, who receive preferential tee times and reduced rates — giving it the unusual character of a semi-private club that's technically open to the public. Jones shaped the layout across the rolling Livermore Valley floor, and the property reflects his disciplined, strategic design philosophy: generous enough to be enjoyed by everyday golfers, but with enough precision demanded off the tee to reward the better player.
Livermore sits at the eastern edge of Alameda County, where the coastal range opens into a broad inland valley better known for its wine country than its fairways. The same sun and wind that define Livermore's viticulture — the AVA produces well-regarded Zinfandel and Merlot, names the nines here openly celebrate — shape the conditions on the course, with afternoon breezes regularly turning a straightforward card into something considerably more demanding.
The NCGA's home course carries a sense of civic purpose rare in public golf. It exists not as a resort showpiece or a daily-fee revenue engine, but as genuine infrastructure for the association's 200,000-plus members across Northern California.
