Few clubs carry the weight of history that Royal Lytham and St Annes does. Founded in 1886 and granted its Royal charter in 1926, the club has hosted the Open Championship more times than almost any other venue — 11 times through 2012, with a roster of champions that includes Bobby Jones (1926), Seve Ballesteros (1979 and 1988), Nick Faldo (1996), and Gary Player. Jones's 1926 victory is commemorated by a plaque on the 17th hole, marking the bunker from which he played one of golf's most celebrated recovery shots. The course sits on links land in the St Annes-on-Sea district of the Fylde Coast, though unusually for a classic links, it opens with a par 3 and is almost entirely surrounded by suburban housing and railway lines rather than open dunes — a setting that surprises first-time visitors.
What the course lacks in dramatic seaside scenery it more than compensates for with sheer strategic complexity. The layout is defined by over 200 bunkers, relentlessly demanding bunkering that punishes the wayward and rewards precise shot-shaping. The closing stretch, in particular, has a reputation for breaking Open Championship fields.
Lancashire's Fylde Coast is flat, often windswept, and blissfully unpretentious — a working-class English seaside region where golf has deep roots. Playing Royal Lytham is less a glamorous resort experience than a serious examination, conducted on a course that has repeatedly proved itself one of the sternest tests in the game.
