Few golf experiences in Texas carry the architectural pedigree of this layout, which bears the name of its designer: Ben Crenshaw, Austin's own two-time Masters champion and one of the sport's most thoughtful and historically minded architects. Working alongside partner Bill Coore, Crenshaw brought to the Barton Creek resort a design philosophy rooted in minimalism and naturalism — letting the land dictate the routing rather than imposing artificial drama upon it. The "Cliffside" name is no marketing flourish; the course works along the dramatic limestone escarpments of the Texas Hill Country, where the Edwards Plateau drops away into the Barton Creek watershed.
The Hill Country terrain delivers elevation changes, cedar and live oak framing, and the kind of caliche-and-limestone subsoil that makes every round feel distinctly Texan. Conditions tend to run firm and fast, rewarding ground-game players who think their way around rather than simply overpowering the layout.
As part of the broader Barton Creek resort complex — one of the premier golf destinations in the American Southwest — the course attracts visitors from across the country while remaining a source of genuine local pride in a city that produced one of the game's true legends.
