Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen — "The Slammer" and "The Squire" — lent more than their nicknames to this course at the World Golf Village resort complex north of Jacksonville. The layout was designed with both legends as consultants, and the Village itself opened in the late 1990s as a kind of pilgrimage site for the game's devotees, anchored by the World Golf Hall of Fame. Playing here carries a certain weight of history, even if the course itself is a resort track rather than a championship test.
St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States, and the broader First Coast region has developed into a serious golf destination over the past few decades. The terrain is classically northeastern Florida — low and open, with water hazards threading through much of the layout, Spanish moss hanging from live oaks, and that subtropical humidity that softens the turf and thickens the air from late spring onward.
For visitors touring the Hall of Fame or attending one of the resort's events, the Slammer & Squire offers something most resort courses can't quite match: a name with genuine meaning, honoring 2 of the game's most beloved characters.
