Rathbun Lake is the largest body of water in Iowa, a 11,000-acre reservoir built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s that transformed the rolling farmland of Appanoose County into something genuinely scenic. The Preserve sits within that lakeside landscape, and the setting gives this southern Iowa course a character that most of the state's courses simply can't match — wooded terrain, elevation change, and water views that feel more like Missouri Ozarks country than the flat prairie most people picture when they think of Iowa golf.
Southern Iowa is an underserved golf region, and a public course of this nature fills a real gap for players in the Centerville, Chariton, and Ottumwa corridor. The area draws anglers, campers, and boaters to Rathbun all summer, and the course gives that same outdoor-recreation crowd a reason to pull the clubs out of the truck.
Without detailed knowledge of specific holes or the course's architect on hand, what's easy to say is that par-72 layouts built around reservoir terrain tend to reward accurate play over raw distance — the natural contours do the work that designers elsewhere have to manufacture.
