Few courses in Central Florida carry the reputation Southern Dunes does. Designed by Steve Smyers and opened in 1993, it routinely appears on lists of Florida's best public courses and has drawn comparisons to the great links-influenced designs of Scotland — high praise for a layout that sits well inland. Smyers sculpted the site's dramatic natural terrain into a series of bold, rolling fairways, massive sand dunes, and exposed bunkers that feel genuinely unusual for this part of the country. The windswept character of the place is not accidental; it was built into the architecture from the start.
Haines City sits in the heart of Polk County, roughly midway between Orlando and Tampa in the Ridge region of Florida — an area of ancient sand hills and elevation changes that most visitors don't expect to find in the Sunshine State. That topography gives Southern Dunes its spine, and the frequent afternoon winds give it its teeth.
This is a genuine destination course that rewards strategic thinking off the tee. The bunkering is aggressive, the greens are large and contoured, and the overall aesthetic is more rugged than the manicured resort layouts nearby. Players who want a serious test rather than a comfortable round will find exactly that here.
