Stranraer Golf Club occupies one of the most dramatically positioned pieces of ground in southwest Scotland, its fairways rolling across the hillside above Loch Ryan with views stretching across the water toward the Rhins of Galloway. The course was designed by James Braid, the 5-time Open champion who shaped more of Scotland's inland and clifftop layouts than any architect of his era, and his trademark use of natural contour is everywhere — greens that tilt with the slope, blind approaches, and holes that demand you read the land before you read the yardage.
Galloway as a region is underappreciated on the Scottish golf trail, sitting west of the main tourist routes with a mild, Gulf Stream-influenced climate that keeps the ground playable well into autumn. Stranraer town itself is a ferry port connecting Scotland to Northern Ireland, which gives the area a working, unhurried character quite different from the polished resort corridors further north.
At par 70, the course doesn't play long, but Braid's routing rewards local knowledge and punishes complacency, especially when the wind builds off the loch. This is proper, unaffected Scottish golf.
