Few golf experiences in Southern California carry the cachet of The Grand Golf Club, a private layout occupying the coastal bluffs of Del Mar in San Diego's North County. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2004, the course was built as the centerpiece of The Grand Del Mar resort, an opulent Mediterranean-style property that quickly earned a reputation as one of the finest luxury destinations on the West Coast. Fazio routed the course through Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, threading fairways between native chaparral, sycamore groves, and dramatic canyon walls in a way that feels genuinely remote despite the surrounding affluence.
The design rewards strategic thinking over raw power — canyon crossings demand commitment off the tee, and Fazio's characteristically refined bunkering puts a premium on positioning. The conditioning here is meticulous, as you would expect from a club where exclusivity defines the experience.
San Diego's near-perfect year-round climate means the course plays firm and fast in summer and surprisingly lush through winter, with mild temperatures keeping the chaparral fragrant and the canyon views perpetually sharp.
