Few golf venues in England arrived with quite as much fanfare as The Grove. Opened in 2003 and designed by Kyle Phillips — the American architect also responsible for Kingsbarns in Fife — the course was conceived as the centerpiece of a high-end hotel and spa resort on the grounds of a Georgian country estate in Hertfordshire. Phillips shaped a parkland layout that borrows the rolling contours of the estate's historic landscape while incorporating generous water features and sculpted bunkering that give it a distinctly modern, resort-caliber feel.
The course earned its biggest moment in 2006, hosting the American Express World Golf Championship — a rare distinction for a layout so young — which brought the world's top-ranked players to a venue less than 20 miles north of central London. That event put The Grove firmly on the European map as a serious championship test, not merely a luxury amenity.
Hertfordshire's Home Counties setting means lush, well-watered turf through most of the year and the kind of manicured conditioning that resort guests expect. For visiting golfers, the combination of genuine design ambition, estate surroundings, and proximity to London makes The Grove one of the more compelling resort rounds in southern England.
