Few golf courses in the Western Hemisphere occupy terrain quite like this one. Guacalito de la Isla sits on Nicaragua's Emerald Coast, a stretch of Pacific shoreline in the Rivas department where volcanic ridgelines meet the ocean and the landscape rolls with dramatic, almost cinematic force. This is one of Central America's most ambitious resort developments, and the golf course is central to its identity — routed through jungle and clifftop terrain that most architects would simply never encounter.
The course was designed by David McLay Kidd, the Scottish architect best known for Bandon Dunes, and it plays to his strengths: bold, natural-feeling ground game golf shaped by the land rather than imposed upon it. Holes move through arroyos, along ridge crests, and toward Pacific panoramas that periodically stop play in its tracks. The routing rewards golfers who think creatively rather than just swing hard.
Nicaragua itself is an underappreciated golf destination — the country's Pacific coast offers dry-season sunshine, consistent trade winds, and a rawness that more developed resort corridors long ago traded away. Guacalito is genuinely one of a kind on this side of the world.
