Rockliffe Hall is one of the northeast of England's most ambitious resort golf projects, built on the grounds of a restored 19th-century hall near Hurworth-on-Tees in County Durham. The course opened in 2009 and was designed by Graeme Webster, stretching across the estate's parkland and taking the River Tees as a recurring natural boundary. It earned considerable attention on arrival for its scale and presentation, and the wider Rockliffe Hall resort — hotel, spa, and grounds — quickly established itself as one of the region's premier leisure destinations.
The unusual par of 77 reflects a layout that doesn't shy away from length or ambition, with several par 5s that make full use of the expansive estate grounds. The River Tees comes into play on a number of holes, rewarding precision and punishing the wayward shot in ways that pure parkland turf alone cannot.
County Durham sits at the heart of a quietly serious golfing region — Royal County Durham to the north, Barnard Castle inland, and the varied courses of Teesside nearby. Rockliffe Hall positions itself at the top end of that local hierarchy, offering a resort experience with genuine course quality to match.
