Thorpeness

Few British seaside courses carry quite the literary and artistic atmosphere of Thorpeness. The village itself was conceived in the early 20th century as a fantasy holiday retreat — a planned idyll of mock-Tudor architecture, a boating lake called the Meare, and a golf course intended as a centrepiece of the community's leisure life. That heritage gives the place a distinctly unhurried, Edwardian quality that most links courses simply don't have.

The course sits on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, a stretch of shingle, heathland, and reed beds that feels genuinely remote despite being just a mile or so from Aldeburgh — home to the famous music festival and long a haunt of writers, painters, and composers, Benjamin Britten among them. The landscape is flat but never featureless, with gorse, heather, and the salt-tinged east wind providing the primary defences. Tight lies and exposed turf reward precise ball-striking over brute length.

As a heathland-links hybrid open to visitors, Thorpeness offers a relaxed but characterful day out — the kind of course where the surroundings do as much work as the design.
