Saipan sits at a remarkable crossroads — a small Pacific island with a layered history spanning ancient Chamorro civilization, Spanish colonization, Japanese administration, and one of World War II's most consequential battles. Golf arrived here as part of a broader effort to develop the island as a tourism destination, drawing visitors primarily from Japan and South Korea, and the Mariana Resort & Country Club reflects that Pacific resort era, positioned in the northern Marpi area where the land meets dramatic coastal scenery along some of the island's most historically significant ground.
Marpi itself carries particular weight — it is the site of the war's tragic final chapter on Saipan, and the landscape here opens onto sweeping views of the Philippine Sea and the island's rugged northern cliffs. Playing golf in this setting means moving through terrain that is genuinely unlike anywhere else a golfer is likely to encounter, with tropical vegetation, ocean exposure, and a sense of remoteness that the scorecard cannot begin to capture.
The Northern Mariana Islands belong to no major golf circuit and host no famous tournaments, which is precisely the point. This is golf at the edge of the map, in a US territory most visitors never think to visit, on an island where the tradewinds and the Pacific horizon do the heavy lifting.
