Emmetsburg sits in the Iowa Great Lakes region of northwest Iowa, a landscape defined by glacial lakes, rolling prairie, and the kind of flat-to-gently-rolling terrain that gives designers room to work with water and wind rather than elevation. Five Island Lake — one of the area's natural glacial lakes — gives the town its character, and almost certainly lends this course its name.
A municipal layout in a small Iowa farm community, Five Island Golf Course serves the everyday golfer: locals chasing a few holes after work, visitors passing through on their way to the bigger resort scene around Spirit Lake and Okoboji to the north. That corner of Iowa takes its golf seriously despite its modest scale, and a community course like this one is often the social backbone of the local game — the place where junior programs live, where handicaps are tracked, and where the same groups have teed off on Saturday mornings for decades.
Northwest Iowa's weather shapes how courses here play: the wind off the prairie is a genuine factor, turning a routine iron shot into a decision, and the season runs hard from late spring through fall before the lakes freeze and the flags come in.
