Cave Creek sits at the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert, where the Valley of the Sun gives way to rugged high desert terrain — saguaro-studded hillsides, rocky arroyos, and the kind of dramatic elevation changes that make Maricopa County golf feel genuinely different from the flat-iron courses closer to downtown Phoenix. Tatum Ranch Golf Club occupies this transitional landscape, and the course reflects it: holes that move through desert washes, natural vegetation framing nearly every fairway, and the Santa Cruz mountains providing a backdrop that no amount of course maintenance can manufacture.
Opened in the late 1980s as part of a master-planned residential community, Tatum Ranch plays as a semi-private facility rooted in its neighborhood. The design works with the natural contours of the land rather than imposing artificial drama — a sensibility common among well-regarded Arizona desert courses of that era, where the rough desert scrub does the heavy lifting as a visual and strategic hazard.
Cave Creek itself has a distinct personality among Phoenix-area golf towns — less resort-polished than Scottsdale, more relaxed and unpretentious, with a genuine Western character. Tatum Ranch fits that identity: a daily-fee course that takes its desert setting seriously without demanding resort prices to play it.
