Austin's public golf scene has long centered on its cluster of city-owned courses, and Grey Rock sits among the more scenic of them, occupying the rolling, cedar-studded terrain of southwest Austin that defines the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country. The landscape here does a lot of the design work — elevation changes, rocky outcroppings, and the characteristically thin Hill Country soil give the course a rugged, natural feel that separates it from flatter municipal layouts elsewhere in the city.
Grey Rock plays as a full par-72 layout with enough length and topography to demand shot-shaping and course management from mid-to-high handicappers and scratch players alike. The terrain rewards players who work the ball rather than simply overpowering it, and the elevation shifts mean aerial yardages rarely tell the whole story.
As Austin has grown into one of the country's most dynamic metro areas, its public courses have absorbed enormous demand.
