Castlewood Country Club occupies a storied place in Bay Area golf history. The original property in the Castlewood Canyon area of the Livermore Valley dates to the early 20th century, and the club has long been one of the more distinguished private addresses in the East Bay. The Hill Course — one of 2 18-hole layouts on the grounds — plays across the elevated, rolling terrain that gives it its name, with the kind of panoramic exposure to the Tri-Valley landscape that the flatter valley floor simply cannot offer. The shorter par 70 format is a design choice, not a concession: the routing demands precision and course management far more than raw distance.
Pleasanton itself sits in the Livermore Valley, better known for its wine country than its golf, though the East Bay hills provide a genuinely compelling setting — dry golden summers, live oak groves, and long sight lines across open ridgelines.
For members, Castlewood offers a distinctly California version of the country club tradition: relaxed in atmosphere, serious about its golf, and rooted in a part of the Bay Area that has been growing fast while the club has stayed quietly itself.
