Bayonet Golf Course

Few military-rooted courses carry as much swagger as Bayonet. Built in 1954 on the former Fort Ord Army base, the course was designed by General Robert McClure and later refined by Gene Bates, earning a reputation as one of the most demanding layouts on the Monterey Peninsula — a region that already sets the bar about as high as golf gets. Bayonet earned its name honestly: the routing is aggressive, full of elevation change, and lined with the sprawling live oaks that define this stretch of central California coast.

The Monterey Peninsula is, of course, hallowed ground for American golf, with Pebble Beach and Cypress Point holding court a few miles to the west. Bayonet sits slightly inland and away from the coastline drama, but the terrain and tree canopy give it a distinct, almost brooding character that sets it apart from its more famous neighbors.

Paired with its sister course Black Horse on the same property, Bayonet has hosted USGA qualifiers and high-level amateur competitions, drawing serious players who appreciate a course that demands shot-making from the first tee to the last green.
