Few inland courses in Ireland carry the design pedigree of Carlow Golf Club. The layout was designed by Tom Simpson — the same eccentric English architect responsible for Cruden Bay, Muirfield's revisions, and Ballybunion Old — and his hand is evident throughout. Simpson had a gift for using natural contours to create greens and bunkering that look almost accidental yet demand precision, and Carlow is considered one of his more underappreciated works on the island.
The course sits on the edge of Carlow town along the River Burren, on heathland terrain that gives it a character closer to a Surrey or Berkshire inland classic than the links golf Ireland is most famous for. Heather, gorse, and sandy subsoil underpin a layout that drains well and plays firm and fast in summer — a genuine pleasure when conditions are right.
Carlow Golf Club has long been a respected fixture in Leinster golf and regularly appears in Irish course rankings. For visitors expecting links drama, the quiet, strategic demands of this heathland gem can come as a welcome surprise.
