Leewukop Golf Course (Abandoned)

Johannesburg's golf history is littered with courses that didn't survive the pressures of urban expansion, and Leewukop appears to be among them. The name itself carries Afrikaans roots — "leeu" meaning lion, a nod to the Highveld's deep cultural and natural heritage — and the course once occupied land in what is one of the world's great inland metropolitan golf cities. Johannesburg sits at roughly 1,700 metres above sea level on the Witwatersrand, and that altitude means the ball flies noticeably farther than at sea level, a quirk every golfer notices on their first round in Gauteng.

The surrounding region remains exceptionally golf-rich, with world-class facilities like Houghton, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington, and Randpark all within reach. That density of quality competition may well have contributed to Leewukop's closure — survival requires either a loyal private membership or a compelling public offer.

Whatever the circumstances of its abandonment, the site stands as a reminder that golf infrastructure is never permanent. Courses reclaimed by development or disuse are a quieter part of every city's sporting history.
