Jack Nicklaus routed this course directly through the remnants of a 19th-century copper smelting complex, making Old Works one of the most genuinely unusual rounds of golf anywhere in the country. The black sand in the bunkers isn't an aesthetic choice — it's actual slag, a byproduct of the smelting process, repurposed from the industrial waste that once defined this site. The course opened in 1997 and was built in partnership with the Atlantic Richfield Company as part of one of the largest Superfund cleanup projects in U.S. history, transforming contaminated land into a playable, publicly accessible layout that the town of Anaconda owns and operates.
The old smelter stacks, brick ruins, and flue remnants frame nearly every hole, giving the round a visual drama you simply won't find at a conventional course. Nicklaus worked with the landscape rather than against it, and the result is a design that feels earned by its setting.
Anaconda sits in the Deer Lodge Valley, rimmed by the Pintler Mountains, and the surrounding scenery is classic southwest Montana — big sky, high desert, and the kind of quiet that reminds you how far you are from anywhere crowded. For a municipally owned course, the quality here consistently surprises first-time visitors.
