High in the Blue Ridge Mountains of far western North Carolina, Sapphire National sits at an elevation where the air is noticeably thinner and cooler than the piedmont below — a genuine escape from lowland heat that draws golfers from across the Southeast each summer. The community of Sapphire occupies a plateau between Cashiers and Lake Toxaway, a stretch of Transylvania County known for dramatic ridgelines, waterfalls, and one of the highest average rainfalls in the eastern United States.
The course carries a par of 70, which signals a layout that rewards precision and course management over raw power. Mountain golf at this altitude plays differently than flatlanders expect — carries behave oddly, downhill lies are constant companions, and the terrain itself does much of the architectural work. What the scorecard cannot convey is how visually striking mountain golf becomes when the hardwoods turn in October.
Sapphire National presents as a private or semi-private retreat consistent with the upscale residential character of the Cashiers-Sapphire corridor, a corner of North Carolina that has long attracted second-home buyers and destination golfers alike.
