Few private clubs in New England carry the quiet reverence that Old Sandwich does. Designed by Gil Hanse and opened in 2007, it was built on land near Plymouth's historic South Shore with a clear architectural philosophy: create something that looks and feels ancient, as though the course had always been there. Hanse — known for his minimalist, land-first approach — sculpted dramatic contours, deep pot bunkers, and firm, fast playing surfaces that draw direct comparisons to the great heathland and links courses of the British Isles. Golf Digest has ranked it among the best courses in Massachusetts and, at various points, among the finest in the country.
Plymouth itself carries enormous historical weight as the site of the Pilgrims' landing in 1620, and the surrounding landscape — sandy soils, native scrub, pine, and open sky — lends Old Sandwich a rugged, timeless atmosphere that suits Hanse's design perfectly.
Membership is deliberately limited, keeping the club intimate and the course unhurried. This is not a place for corporate outings or resort tourism — it exists to protect a very specific kind of golf experience, one defined by walking, thoughtful shot-making, and a course that rewards local knowledge built up slowly over time.
