Lake City sits on the western shore of Lake Pepin, the wide natural lake formed where the Chippewa River meets the Mississippi — one of the more dramatic stretches of river landscape in the upper Midwest. Bluffs rise sharply from the water's edge, and the surrounding terrain rolls through hardwood forest and open farmland. It's the kind of setting that gives a golf course something to work with before a single hole is routed.
The Jewel Golf Club occupies this scenic corner of southeastern Minnesota, and the name signals a certain ambition — courses that earn that kind of branding tend to lean into their natural surroundings rather than fight them. A par-71 layout suggests at least one departure from the standard template, likely a pair of par 5s on one nine balanced differently on the other, which can produce an interesting rhythm through the round.
Lake City is a small town — waterfront, unhurried — and a round here probably feels more like a genuine regional destination than a stopover. The Mississippi bluff country has a character all its own.
