Jack Nicklaus designed this private club as the centerpiece of an ultra-exclusive residential community on the lava fields of South Kona, where the Big Island's raw volcanic landscape becomes the dominant feature of nearly every hole. The course sits on a dramatic oceanfront site, routing across hardened lava flows with the Pacific visible throughout, and the contrast between the dark rock, sparse native vegetation, and brilliant blue water creates a visual experience unlike almost anything else in American golf. Opening in the early 2000s, it was conceived from the start as a world-class amenity for homeowners rather than a public destination.
Kailua-Kona sits on the dry, sunny leeward side of the Big Island — reliably low rainfall, consistent trade winds, and warm temperatures year-round. That leeward position means the course plays firm and fast, and the afternoon winds off the ocean demand real shot-shaping from tee to green.
Membership here is tied to property ownership within the community, making Hokulia one of the more exclusive golf experiences in Hawaii. For those who do play it, the setting alone — volcanic coastline, ocean breezes, and the scale of the Big Island behind you — is the reason to make the trip.
