Lloyd Clifton designed Westchase Golf Club, which opened in 1992 as the centerpiece of the Westchase master-planned community on Tampa's western fringe. Clifton, a prolific Florida architect whose work leaned toward strategic, player-friendly design, routed the course through the neighborhood's natural wetlands and stands of mature oaks, giving it more visual variety than the average suburban track. The layout is well-regarded locally and has remained a popular daily-fee option for west Tampa golfers for more than 3 decades.
Florida golf at this latitude means Bermuda fairways baking firm in summer, afternoon thunderstorms that can clear a course in minutes, and a playing season that effectively runs year-round. The wetlands that frame several holes are not decorative — errant shots disappear into them with regularity, and the subtropical vegetation gives the course a lush, almost enclosed feel despite the surrounding residential streets.
