Few golf clubs on Vancouver Island carry the kind of quiet prestige that Arbutus Ridge has built since opening in the 1990s as the centrepiece of a planned residential community on the Saanich Peninsula's southern reaches. The course was designed to complement the natural contours of the hillside property rather than overwhelm them, and the result is a layout that rewards accurate, thoughtful play over raw power — something the par 70 configuration signals clearly from the first tee.
Cobble Hill sits in the Cowichan Valley, one of the warmest and driest pockets of British Columbia, where the same mild Mediterranean-influenced climate that draws wineries and lavender farms also keeps the fairways firm and the season unusually long by Canadian standards. The native arbutus trees — the rust-barked, twisted broadleafs unique to this coastal corner of the country — give the club both its name and much of its visual character.
As a private members' club, Arbutus Ridge offers the kind of unhurried, community-rooted golf that's increasingly rare: familiar faces, consistent conditions, and a course that reveals new subtleties the more you play it.
