Golf Santa Ponça I

Few courses on Mallorca carry the history that Golf Santa Ponça I does. Designed by Folco Nardi and opened in 1977, it was one of the first championship-standard layouts built on the island, arriving just as the Balearics were establishing themselves as a serious European golf destination. For years it served as the flagship of what would become a multi-course complex, with Santa Ponça II and III eventually joining it in the hills above the bay. The course has hosted the Spanish Open on multiple occasions, giving it a competitive pedigree that few other Mallorcan venues can match.

The setting in Calvià municipality places you in the southwestern corner of Mallorca, where the Tramuntana foothills begin their descent toward the Mediterranean coast. The terrain is characteristically Balearic — terracotta earth, mature pines, carob trees, and the kind of dry, aromatic scrub that lines fairways and gives errant shots their punishment.

This is a course that rewards local knowledge. Undulating fairways, strategically placed water hazards, and firm greens that take a practiced read make it far more than a holiday resort layout, even if the views and winter sunshine remind you constantly of where you are.
