Winnapaug Country Club sits at the edge of Westerly, a coastal Rhode Island town where the saltwater ponds and Atlantic shoreline define the landscape as much as anything man-made. The club takes its name from Winnapaug Pond, one of the barrier lagoons that separate this stretch of South County from the open ocean — and that geography shapes everything about the playing experience. Wind is a constant variable here, shifting off the water in ways that can transform a familiar hole from one round to the next.
Westerly occupies the southwestern corner of Rhode Island, a state with a surprisingly rich private club tradition packed into a small footprint. The area draws from both the year-round local community and the considerable summer population that fills the shoreline cottages and estates each season, giving Winnapaug the character of a club with real roots and real regulars.
As a private members' club, Winnapaug rewards those who learn its rhythms — the way the light falls late in the afternoon off the pond, which holes play longer into the prevailing breeze, and when the course is simply at its most beautiful.
